The idea that designers are bound to be servants of other people's and companies' products is extremely pervasive. Sure, you may build your own design agency but, in the end, that agency is simply a collective effort to serve someone else. From my perspective, though, the world is waking up to the idea that designers can be founders of a product and not just create the beautiful wrapping around some engineering core. A recent study by Boston's Design Management Institute showed that design-driven businesses have outperformed the Standard & Poor's 500 by an astounding 228% over the past 10 years. These were companies that had design embedded within the company's organizational structure, design leadership present at senior levels, and a commitment to design's use as an innovation resource. There's often a lot of confusion about which files formats you need to give a client when delivering a final logo or branding package. You probably know that you have to give your client a variety of file formats, but which ones? Clients may frequently contact you asking for strange file formats or ad-hoc logo file requests. Print vendors sometimes use outdated technologies that require old and obscure files. You may wonder what all these file formats are used for and if they are even necessary. I can say with the confidence of experience -- the moment you decide not to provide a file format in your logo package is the moment that your client will send you an annoying email asking you for that exact file. So don't give them the opportunity to distract or upset your design mojo. Make a logo package that includes all of the file formats described below to cover all of your bases. Ok, but which file formats and why? I'm getting there, I promise. Logo File Formats Explained The issue with many file format explanations is that they get too technical. They dive deep and discuss things like lossless compression, bit depth, bitmap, […]
Alejandro Celaya has a new post on his site covering one thing he sees that makes the Zend Expressive framework (based on the full Zend Framework) one of the best to work with: it's interoperability with other libraries and tools. I have written a lot of posts about Zend Framework in general and Zend Expressive in particular, but I have noticed that I have never talked about one of the things that, from my point of view, makes Expressive so game-changing, Interoperability. He starts with a bit of background about frameworks in PHP and how developers most commonly selected them because of the features they bundled. Picking and choosing different parts of different frameworks wasn't an easy task until the PHP-FIG came around to try to consolidate and standardize interfaces. This made interoperability possible and provided the methods for Zend Expressive to implement for working with just about any library you'd like to plug in. He then gets into detail about Zend Expressive's interoperability functionality and which are based on PHP-FIG PSRs (recommended interfaces). He also covers some of the extendibility Zend Expressive brings to the table as well as providing a proof of concept to help illustrate this points.
