Mobile data traffic has quadrupled since 2013. In order to cope with a newly diversified device landscape, front end engineers have embraced responsive design. Responsive layouts squish and stretch, tailoring themselves to the browsing context at hand. But images -- which account for nearly two-thirds of the weight of the web -- have been stuck in the fixed-layout past. To date, developers have had to optimize images for a single context, sending either overweight or under-sized images to most of their users. Thankfully, new markup and some cutting-edge server-side technologies are allowing authors to craft images which are as flexible and adaptable as the responsive layouts that surround them. Implementing "responsive images" is the most important thing that you can do for a responsive site's performance and opens up new opportunities for visual web design. In this webinar, we'll take these new responsive image features for a spin and discuss the past, present, and future of images on the web. There will be more than 4B mobile devices in 2020. Is your website ready? Join this webinar to learn the best practices and insights about responsive images. (Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by Cloudinary.)

You're likely already familiar with media queries. They're in widespread use for making websites responsive. The width and height properties contain the viewport's dimensions. We then use CSS to render different layouts at different dimensions. The prefers-color-scheme media query works the same way. The user can configure their operating system to use a light or dark theme. prefers-color-scheme contains that value. The value is either light or dark, though the W3C spec states that it might support future values like sepia. We specify different values of CSS variables for both modes and let the user's OS decide.
With the constant updates in a range of iPhones, Android-powered devices, and other smartphones, it is not surprising that mobile user interfaces take up a huge market share. Material design, a brand new Google’s visual language, adds fuel to the fire, strengthening this field and placing it in the dominant position. Good graphical material that can assist in this matter such as profiles, slide-out menus, weather widgets, various sorts of forms, controllers, navigations, and much more is always in demand. It helps quickly compose a mockup of the app and streamline the workflow. Today we are going to replenish your toolkit with 100 best mobile UI designs from 2015.
