When you hear grid, what's the first thing that comes to mind? For most designers, it is often a horizontal based concept with columns across the canvas. This is especially true when thinking about web and digital design projects. But what about vertical grids? It is just as important to create flow up and down […]
A few months ago, I stumbled upon the API treasure of Microsoft. It was a jaw dropping moment when I saw more than a dozen Artificial Intelligence based APIs. HTML email: Two words that, when combined, brings tears to a developer's eyes. If you're a web developer, it's inevitable that coding an email will be a task that gets dropped in your lap at some time in your career, whether you like it or not. Coding HTML email is old school. Think back to 1999, when we called ourselves "webmasters" and used Frontpage, WYSIWYG editors and tables to mark up our websites. Not much has changed in email design. In fact, it has gotten worse. With the introduction of mobile devices and more and more email clients, we have even more caveats to deal with when building HTML email. The post An Introduction To Building And Sending HTML Email For Web Developers appeared first on Smashing Magazine.
Icon and vector marketplaces like Iconfinder (where I work) are making well-designed vector icons an inexpensive and readily available resource for web and print designers. Thousands of high-quality premium icon sets and hundreds of great free sets are available. Every icon set submitted to Iconfinder is reviewed and evaluated for potential appeal to our website users and for potential commercial value as premium icons. When reviewing icon sets submitted to the website, we have a responsibility to our designers and to our customers to make sure all premium icons on the website are of the highest possible quality. The post Easy Steps To Better Icon Design appeared first on Smashing Magazine.

Thomas Vortuba has a new tutorial posted to his site showing how to easily switch from PHP_CdeSniffer to EasyCodingStandard for enforcing the structure and syntax of your PHP application's code. Last year, I helped Shopsys Coding Standards and LMC PHP Coding Standard to migrate from PHP_CodeSniffer to EasyCodingStandard. There are a few simple A ? B changes, but one has to know about them or will get stuck. Do you also use PHP_CodeSniffer and give it EasyCodingStandard a try? Today we look at how to migrate step by step. The post then walks you through the five-step process and lists out the major changes: From String Codes to Autocompleted Classes From @codingStandardsIgnoreStart to skip Parameter From 0 and to skip Parameter From XML to YML Config Paths Configuring Sniff Values From Severity and Warning to Just Errors From Beautifier to --fix option Each step includes either the command required, the configuration changes to make or code examples of the refactor to help illustrate the changes.
