It's the chicken and egg debate of website design: What comes first "good design" or functional design? Both answers are right… and wrong. Unlike much of what we share on Design Shack, this is more of a personal essay on the benefits of each type of thinking and why I'll design with function over "good […]

A professional blog is not only useful because it offers valuable content that the visitors like to read. Many other aspects also play a significant role when it comes to a professional appearance. One of them is the highest possible user-friendliness, as a good blogger will always think about his visitors first. To allow them to find the information they’re looking for as fast as possible, a sitemap for your blog makes sense. A sitemap is very useful for your readers. They have an overview of all options that help them find the desired information as fast as possible. There’s no reason to not offer this service to your visitors as the sitemap itself is created very quickly. The structuring of your site before will require quite a bit of brainpower. Before getting started, consider the following: you need to set yourself apart from the many blogs that already deal with your topics. Thus, it is necessary to empathize with your visitors and ask yourself what would help you on a stranger’s blog. By the way: I’m not talking about the XML sitemap that Google and other search engines can access to better index your website. Creating a Good Sitemap […]

Earlier this year, support for CSS grid layout landed in most major desktop browsers. Naturally, the specification is one of the hot topics at meet-ups and conferences. After having some conversations about grid and progressive enhancement, I believe that there's a good amount of uncertainty about using it. I heard some quite interesting questions and statements, which I want to address in this post. "When can I start using CSS grid layout?" "Too bad that it'll take some more years before we can use grid in production." "Do I need Modernizr in order to make websites with CSS grid layout?" "If I wanted to use grid today, I'd have to build two to three versions of my website." The CSS grid layout module is one of the most exciting developments since responsive design. We should try to get the best out of it as soon as possible, if it makes sense for us and our projects. The post Enhancing CSS Layout: From Floats To Flexbox To Grid appeared first on Smashing Magazine.

The Laravel News site has posted the latest part of their "Building a Laravel Translation Package" series focusing on a pre-launch checklist of items to get in place before it's finally released. In the last part of the series, we finished up building the Laravel Translation package. With this completed, we are ready to start thinking about releasing the it to the world. However, before we do, there are few important steps we need to take. The post covers some of the final non-code items to take care of: Good documentation Defining contribution guidelines Providing issue templates for easier reporting of bugs/issues by others Selecting a license Setting up continuous integration for running tests, checking code style, etc. Each item in the list includes a brief summary of what's involved and, for some, links to other resources and tools that can help get it accomplished.
