Matt Glaman has a tutorial posted to his site sharing some of his experiences in using PhpStorm and its auto-testing feature when working with his codebase following a test-driven development approach. When I work, I try to follow the principles of Test-Driven Development. I have found it to aid me in writing cleaner code, identifying odd coupling of components or crazy accidental dependencies between components. It also lets me write my API first by using mocks against interfaces I have defined. [...] One of the key aspects of TDD to is to write your test and assert expectations, and then write code. That means you will be running your tests -- a lot. That means having to manually run your tests for each code change (as you should) will kill your velocity. That's where PhpStorm's auto-test functionality comes in. He includes a bit more detail about the feature including a screenshot) and a screencast video of it in action.
In computer science, there is nothing more fundamental than control structures. Every student learned about them in the first few weeks of any computer science program. We could not code without them, period. But they are not set in stone: we did get rid of the infamous GOTO in the 80s! At the pre-ALGOL meeting held in 1959 Heinz Zemanek explicitly threw doubt on the necessity for GOTO statements; at the time no one paid attention to his remark, including Edsger W. Dijkstra, who later became the iconic opponent of GOTO. The 1970s and 1980s saw a decline in the use of GOTO statements in favor of the "structured programming" paradigm, with goto criticized as leading to "unmaintainable spaghetti code"

In a world between building accessible interfaces, optimizing the experiences for users, and big businesses profiting from this, we need to find a way to use our knowledge meaningfully. When we read that even the engineers who built it don't know how their autonomous car algorithm works or that the biggest library of books that mankind ever saw is in the hand of one single company and not accessible to anyone, we might lose our faith in what we do as developers. But then, on the other hand, we stumble across stories about accessible smart cities or about companies that embrace full honesty in their culture. There are amazing examples of how we can pursue meaningful work and build a better future. Let's not let negative news get us down, but let's embrace them as a reason to change for the better instead. The post Web Development Reading List #181: Mass Deployments, Prepack, And Accessible Smart Cities appeared first on Smashing Magazine.
