Sergey Zhuk has a new post to his site showing how to use the ReactPHP library to scrape web content automatically from a site that doesn't provide other means for getting the data. Have you ever needed to grab some data from a site that doesn't provide a public API? To solve this problem we can use web scraping and pull the required information out from the HTML. Of course, we can manually extract the required data from a website, but this process can become very tedious. So, it will be more efficient to automate it via the scraper. Well, in this tutorial we are going to scrap cats images from <a href="https://www.pexels.com/>Pexels. This website provides high quality and completely free stock photos. They have a public API but it has a limit of 200 requests per hour. He shows how to use ReactPHP to make concurrent requests (rather than one after another) asynchronously using the buzz-react HTTP client. He builds out the main Scraper class that pulls in the content for each page requested. With that in place, he then shows how he extracted the image URLs from the pages via the DomCrawler Symfony component. He finishes up showing how to take these images and save them locally as the asynchronous process runs.

Gary Hockin had been working on a book for anyone out there looking to share their experience or ideas at a tech conference but didn't end up finishing it: "Conference Speaking for Everyone". He did want to share some of the content from the book to at least help would-be speakers deal with one of the main parts of conference speaking: Submitting to a Call for Papers. What even is this? This is a full chapter from my started-but-never-finished book called Conference Speaking for Everyone. I'm posting this finished single chapter that's been sitting on my laptop for nearly a year to a) Get some feedback and hopefully some impetus to finish the book, and b) Put what I hope is some useful information into the hands of the people who need it. In the example chapter he covers topics like: how speakers are accepted to speak at a conference what kind of topics you could potentially speak about tips for writing session abstracts/summaries He finishes up the chapter with a mention of expenses around the speaking (if selected). The policies from conference to conference vary, so he recommends being sure you completely understand them before agreeing to speak.

Google has decided to retire Picasa, its flagship photo sharing service, and will now focus solely on Google Photos. For quite many years, Google had been promoting Picasa as a photo and video sharing service, similar to Yahoo's Flickr, but less popular and less feature-packed. Of late, Google had launched Google Photos, and with seamless integration for Photos on Google+ and Android devices, Picasa was falling out of favor. With effect from later this year (May 01, 2016), all existing Picasa users can now log in to Google Photos and access their Picasa content therein, and even make changes to the albums. However, you can still browse and view your Picasa Web Albums, though all further edits and changes will have to be done via Google Photos. And if you have been using the Picasa Desktop application, you can continue using it, but after March 15, it will no longer be supported, nor updated. Google Photos has its own desktop uploader, so you can make the switch. If you have used the Picasa API in your web projects and websites, now is the perfect time to make the transition towards Google Photos or another similar service. The API will continue […]* You might also be interested in the following articlesGoogle Will No Longer Serve Flash Ads in 2017JPEGmini: Drastically Reduces the File Size of Your Images on the Web,15 Free Google Tools You Should UseGratisography: Fresh Service for Free PhotosGoogle Web Designer: No Less than No More Flash in Banner AdsSkyFonts: The Best Way to Use Google Fonts on Your Desktop
